History
The first mention of a law enforcement officer in the City of Philomath was
in 1883. From 1883 until 1946 the law enforcement officer in Philomath was called the
"City Marshal." The Marshals duties include repairing city streets,
collecting taxes and enforcing the laws. The City Marshal was elected to his position.
Beginning in 1947 the City council has appointed a Police Chief. For many years the Chief
was the only commissioned officer in the city. As Philomath grew in population the police
department also grew. Today there are eight commissioned officers,
six active
reserves and five cadets. |
